About The Hotel

Westport is one of those very special Irish towns that is a definite destination. People do not just drive through Westport, they go there because they want to enjoy all that its pretty streets, interestings shops, pubs and restaurants, have to offer. Not only that but people go there because of Croagh Patrick and then to see the fabulous Westport House.

Located right in the middle of the town is the Westport Plaza Hotel owned by a brother and sister team, Joe and Anne Corcoran. Joe and Anne are extremely go ahead and, building a strong management team around them, have developed the Westport Plaza into a sleek smart hotel which has been attracting all the right kind of notice and awards!

There are three levels of bedrooms, standard, silver and gold, plus junior suites and then the Presidential suite. All of the rooms are superbly decorated in a contemporary style using rich plush fabrics and colours and have King Size beds, Italian marble bathrooms with separate shower and jacuzzi bath facilities. They are air conditioned, have Plasma TVs with all the bells and whistles and mini bars. The difference in the silver and gold rooms is that they have balconies overlooking the beautifully landscaped rooftop garden, or alternatively the courtyard. But whichever is your choice you can be assured it will have all the comforts you would wish for.

Last year saw the opening of their new Spa Sula. This is a great addition to the hotel for we all work so hard nowadays that when we go away we like to be able to indulge in a bit of pampering. There are body wraps and body polishes, all sorts of beautifying and relaxation therapies. I had the Nuat Namman Body Oil Ceremony which you can customise for relaxation, slimming, purifying or energising. I am always wired to the moon so I went for the relaxation programme which was gorgeous, using lemongrass and orange essential oils.

After my relaxation treatments, and duly dolled up, we headed to the buzzy Plaza Bar for a cocktail before dinner in the cool Restaurant Merlot. They have an excellent table d’hote menu and a wide ranging innovative a la carte offering the best of local fresh seafood and Irish meats. I was with a girlfriend and she had delicious pan seared large scallops with a salad of green asparagus and girolle mushrooms with a raisin and caper vinaigrette, whilst I had very interesting black pudding wontons on pepper and onion jam with an organic goat’s cheese fondue. We followed up with rump of lamb with Puy lentil stew and confit garlic – delicious – as was pan-fried halibut fillet with a fennel and Pernod coulis.

You have the best of all worlds at the Westport Plaza – make the most of it.
