About The Hotel
It’s many a long year now since the legendary Youen Jacob Snr set sail from his native Brittany and landed on the shores of Ireland. He opened his Chez Youen restaurant in the little fishing village of Baltimore, West Cork, concentrating on shellfish served the simple way that it is in France. The rest, as they say, is history. He has continued to enthrall diners with big platters of jumbo Galley Head prawns, Sherkin Island Oysters and lobster for years and has played host to hundreds of well-known names from here and abroad.
Baltimore is an enchanting village straight out of the Pirates of Penzance or the Caribbean – but it is just more beautiful in West Cork. Really magic it has to be experienced. The village attracts such a diverse and colourful cross section of visitors that it has a unique atmosphere. Baltimore is your oyster whether you want to swim, dive, fish, sail, whale watch, dolphin watch, island-hop or simply sit in the square and watch the sun go down in splendour over the harbour and Mount Gabriel.
Youen’s family are now grown and actively involved in the business. Youen Jnr opened a fab casual continental style café on The Square called La Jolie Brise and has now, not only married the lovely Kate, but has bought the next door pub, knocked it and done a major redevelopment. On the ground floor is a big bar called Jacobs with over that a lovely restaurant aptly named The Look Out with a 25-foot panoramic glass window – can you imagine that for a view over Baltimore Harbour. What was formerly the Youen’s Baltimore Bay Guest House has been incorporated and enlarged and they now have 13 spankingly great bedrooms.
Understated chic is the theme, furnished in a contemporary classy style with well-chosen antique pieces, which intermingle charmingly with the cool modern furniture and feel of this boutique guesthouse. Walls are cool cream, the rooms are a good size, bed linen is crisp and fresh, there are televisions with videos, direct dial phones, and you are right smack in the middle of things. Sit down outside the door, and take in the sun and the atmosphere whilst you have your cappuccino, or later in the day delicious pizzas and pastas, grilled fish or vegetarian dishes, chill out in the Bar and finish the evening with a fab dinner in the restaurant.
Breakfast can be continental or the Full Irish - whatever is your choice – they also offer fish plus delicious hot chocolate. You can bring the family – they have family rooms and you can also bring Fido.
