​I wonder sometimes if we expect too much of restaurants, as we push for better value on our plates? After all, they’re not charities, and restaurateurs work hard in a difficult and competitive market to make a living for their families. A restaurant review has to be balanced. There’s no point in going out and being all nit-picky in print or on social media, hatcheting what is clearly being marketed as a value menu. You have to review it for what it is and what it has to offer the consumer.

With steak houses having a moment once again, including the arrival to Dublin of the pricey UK chain Hawksmoor, and fillet steaks generally north of €45 in most places, the new Boeuf & Frites in Temple Bar hit the ground with crowds battling to get across the doorstep to try their “three-course” steak menu, sporting 7oz prime Irish fillet or 10oz prime Irish striploin at €29.95, including bottomless fries. There’s also a chicken menu offering an Irish chargrilled half chicken served two ways for €25.95.
