About The Restaurant

Shanghai Express is Jean Marc Tsai’s brilliant little wine bar bistro doing the most amazing Tapas size portions of Asian Bites priced from €5.50 to €8.50. Jean Marc Tsai is a FranCo.Chinese Chef who has lived for at least twenty five years in Kinsale and is one of the best chefs around. Over the years, he just always seems to hit the nose on the head of what people what to eat at that particular time. Jean Marc can produce the most delicious French food as well as amazing Asian dishes – his repertoire is never ending. Every winter he also heads East and comes home with fresh ideas. A couple of years ago he opened his cute little Shanghai Express which offers the most incredible value and incredibily delicious food. We visit there every time we are down in Kinsale, which is fairly frequently, and have our favourite dishes. Seared Sirloin Beef Teriyaki is to die for. It is served rare and succulent on a killer wasabi and spring onion mash. Five Spice Roast Chicken and Coriander Spring rolls come with a duo of dips. From Malaysia there is slow cooked Lamb Rendang which is a rich dish served with coconut creamed rice. Chicken and Spring Onion Potstickers are with a tangy dipping sauce whilst rich and creamy Chicken Korma comes with steamed Basmati rice. From Indonesia you can try a mini version of their National dish which is Nasi Goreng and from Thailand you can have Grilled King Prawns with Basil, Chilli, Garlic and Lemon Butter on a bed of noodles tossed with sesame oil and crispy shallots. Japan is not forgotten on Jean Marc’s menu for you can have deep fried Pak Choi and Goat cheese Wontons on a Japanese crunchy salad. If you don’t want to dine in you can also get a takeout – portions are very ample and the menu includes That Chicken Hotpot with red curry and coconut milk as well as Goan Chicken Curry with a mild Masala sauce. Twice cooked crispy chicken comes with a fresh chilli Schezuan pepper and garlic dressing whilst Three Happiness Beef is with Chinese mushrooms, Oyster sauce and a light soy. Caramelised Vietnamese Pot Belly Pork is slow cooked with Star Anise and you will be dreaming of it for weeks. The wine list is reasonably priced and the whole atmosphere is pure fun. Discover the secret of those in the know in Kinsale that is the Shanghai Express.
