About The Restaurant

Just an hour from Dublin, in a picturesque coastal setting close to Gorey, The Strand Cahore offers the perfect mix of great food, friendly service and stunning views. With a long history, spanning more than 80 years, the Hanley family took the reins in 2018 and it has gone from strength to strength since then. Perched up above the pier at Cahore point and the safe swimming beach, it’s a perfect spot for families, couples and indeed as a space for weddings and corporate events.

The menus here are a celebration of fresh and local ingredients, with superb seafood as you might expect given its location. The a la carte menu is divided into small plates and mains, which I love, as you can go ‘old-fashioned’ with a starter and mains or try out several dishes in trendy tapas fashion.

Small plates here include dishes such as fresh prawns with Gubeen chorizo and samphire in chilli and garlic oil served with some crusty sourdough; Richie Doyle beef cheek croquettes with a smoky wood sauce; or fish cakes in a golden crumb with tossed leaves, pickled cucumber and lemon aioli. Spicy chicken wings with a homemade blue cheese dip are sure to please, as are chargrilled bruschetta with heirloom tomatoes, basil pesto and garlic oil.

They do fab wood fired pizzas as mains as well, with a delicious range to choose from such as local Macamore buffalo sausage; organic chicken and homemade basil pesto; or maybe Serrano ham and pineapple. All pizzas can be made in child friendly portions as well.

Seafood mains at The Strand Cahore are always a delight, with wonderful offerings like pan-fried hake with Cahore creamy chowder sauce served with mash and samphire; Kilmore Quay pan-fried lemon sole with sundried tomato crumbs, ratatouille and mash; or perhaps a feast of 'yellow belly' beer-battered haddock with house fries, mushy mint peas and homemade tartare sauce.

Carnivores too are sure to be impressed with meaty options such as slow-cooked Wexford lamb shank in a red wine gravy with creamy mash and braised puy lentils; beef and Guinness stew with mash topped with a golden puff pastry top; or maybe a sumptuous chargrilled water buffalo burger on a brioche bun with O’Neill’s bacon, Wexford Cheddar, homemade apple chutney, mayo, and a side of truffle fries.

Vegetarians aren’t to be forgotten either with a selection of meat free meals to be had, like a Cashel blue cheese salad with star anise, poached pear, candied walnuts and a Wexford honey mustard dressing, served with chargrilled sourdough; or a traditional Thai curry with jasmine sticky rice and a  side of naan. Veggie dishes can also be had with tofu, or indeed with meat if you’d prefer, but an even more comprehensive vegan a la carte menu is also on offer.

Homemade desserts here include such decadent delights as Belgian chocolate and lotus brownie with butterscotch sauce; pear, walnut and cinnamon crumble with a vanilla bean custard; or maybe a traditional mixed berry trifle with vanilla bean custard and cream.

There’s are cocktails and mocktails and drinks galore, and a great kids menu too. Whatever the occasion, a meal at The Strand Cahore is always a pleasure. Whether it’s an evening meal, or a fab Afternoon Tea by an open fire, take in the wonderful views out over the water across to Wicklow Head as you savour the wonderful food on offer here.

Oh, and I haven’t even mentioned their superb Early Bird…
