About The Restaurant

Very often when I am around the country, and never making any advance plans, I stumble on a great place to eat or stay, and that is exactly what I did when we found The Abbey Tavern Bar & Bistro at Quin, Co.Clare. Quin actually means “Five Ways” and in ancient Ireland it was a reference to the original five roads out of the village. Quin, with its river Rine and best preserved Abbey ruins in the Mid-West region (circa 1350) is a very interesting spot to visit. There is a saying that there is “gold in them thar hills” and Quin has a double link to gold. Quin was site to Ireland’s greatest every discovery of prehistoric gold workings, some of which can be seen in the National Museum in Dublin. Secondly, Quin was birthplace to Paddy Hannan in 1840 who in 1893 started the world’s biggest gold rush in Australia. Anyway, to the real gold that interests foodies of the world, and that is Mark Carroll’s Abbey Tavern Bar & Bistro, which is located right across the road from the famous historic Abbey. The Abbey Tavern itself has been in business since 1802 and is obviously full of atmosphere with its stone walls and architectural features all beautifully restored. We had done a lot of walking that day and would have eaten the leg of the table. They do light snacks in the bar until 7 p.m. – Triple Decker Club Sandwiches with French fries; Lasagne; 6oz steak sandwich, or a cracking homemade 8 oz beef burger flavoured with over ten different spices – that sort of thing. However, we were in the bistro restaurant itself and we dined in great comfort with excellent friendly service. This is not prissy twiddly food but excellent wholesome satisfying food. Starters €3.95/€7.25 included Cajun Chicken Wings; Liscannor Bay Seafood Chowder, Duck Spring Roll, Oven Baked Potato Skins, Panfried tiger prawns with wild mushrooms in a garlic cream sauce. Mains €9.50/€24.75 include really great steaks including a 16oz T-Bone or 10 oz Sirloin both with a choice of black peppercorn sauce, garlic and herb butter or roast red wine jus. Roast half Peking duckling is served on a tembale of mixed herb stuffing with a plum sauce; monkfish comes in collops on ginger flavoured egg noodles served with and orange and ginger crème veloute; steamed fillet of salmon has a mushroom and dill cream sauce and there is always lots of lovely Burren lamb. All of these dishes come with vegetables and do note you are in the country and “Baked Potato with sour cream and chives” means 2 Baked potatoes! Chocaholics will be happy because there is both a chocolate fondant and warm dark chocolate fudge cake on the dessert menut. There is also a Bailey’s cheesecake and a homemade apple and cinnamon crumble with crème Anglaise. They have an Early Bird Menu and they do Sunday lunch – what an excuse for a drive. Wines are available from €16.25 and they also have half bottles very reasonably priced.
