About The Restaurant
With three restaurants now operating, the original and much-loved Andhra Bhavan on Marlborough Street has clearly proved a big hit with Indian aficionados over the years. Celebrated for its delicious authentic South Indian fare, set in a relaxed yet atmospheric space, from the moment you arrive the staff are friendly and attentive, ensuring that you enjoy every moment of your visit.
Starters include some great meaty dishes like crispy Kaju chicken fry, Tandoori prawns, murgh Malai chicken, as well as classics like lamb seekh kebab and Kheema Pav (an iconic Mumbai street food consisting of a rich spiced lamb minced meat curry served with soft butter-toasted bread rolls). As you might expect with Indian cuisine, there are plenty of veg options too, such as Malai cheese broccoli, crispy corn, samosas and bajjis to beat the band, plus their delicious gunpowder fries.
For the mains, the old favourites like chicken tikka masala, lamb chettinad and butter chicken are beautifully delivered, along with a whole host of less familiar dishes like Gongura lamb curry, Methi chicken, or Malabar fish curry. Veggie dishes include the likes of aloo Gobi, Bhendi Masala (okra) or a Gutti Vankaya curry (eggplant), with lots of dahl and paneer choices also.
Besides from their ‘curry’ mains, they have some excellent biryani dishes as well with a variety of styles and meats to choose from. There’s a delicious assortment of fried doughy Chaat too, not to mention their Thali selection, which, with an assortment of textures and flavours served up on a single platter can often be the best way to sample a wider variety of tastes and sensations.
For dessert, there are some superb authentic delights to be enjoyed, whether it’s the kulfi (ice-cream), Gulab Jamun (soft, spongy milk-solid balls deep-fried to a golden brown and soaked in a warm, fragrant sugar syrup) or indeed the Shahi Tukda, a luxurious Mughlai bread pudding dessert that’s name translates to ‘royal bite’.
If you really love South Indian cuisine, then you must drop by early someday to check out their breakfast offering, which has Dosa galore, not to mention a variety of idli (pillow-soft steamed cakes), Vada (fried savoury doughnuts) and Uttapam (pancakes made from fermented rice and black lentil).
For an authentic mouth-watering South Indian experience, Andhra Bhavan is hard to top.
