About The Hotel
A rather splendid neo-Georgian pile on some 600 acres, having been a Patrician Brothers boarding school since 1928, Ballyfin opened as a five-star hotel in 2011 following a nine-year restoration project by the late American billionaire Fred Krehbiel and his Kerry-born wife Kay, but it’s now owned by their sons Jay and Liam.
It quickly established itself as the most exclusive destination in the country – with prices to match. A plethora of A-listers and the fabulously wealthy have slipped in and out beneath its massive portals, including the now divorced Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, who stayed there on their honeymoon in 2014, as well as former US president Joe Biden, George Clooney and many more.
From the front gate in, everything runs like clockwork, just as one would expect from one of the most beautiful houses in Ireland.
As you roll up, the dramatic vision of the mansion in the distance and three awaiting members of staff standing like statues beneath the mighty columns at the top of the steps comes into view – and you think, why didn’t I stop before I was in sight to put on the lipstick? Inside, Champagne and an introductory tour of the splendiferously embellished reception rooms awaits.
Each of Ballyfin’s 21 stately rooms and private suites has been impeccably restored to reflect a chapter in its long history. From 17th-century Flemish tapestries and Chinese panels owned by the Prince of Hanover to huge marble baths, every inch of Ballyfin screams opulence and good taste.
Once you’ve settled in, make some time to visit The Ballyfin Spa, a heavenly escape from the stress of the real world, where besides the selection of facials, massages and body & beauty treatments to soothe and restore you, they also have an indoor pool, vitality pool, gym and sauna as well.
There’s a host of activities to consider during your stay, from wine or whiskey tastings, a floristry masterclass with their in-house florist, and superb nature and garden walks on this stunning estate, to the likes of kayaking, falconry, clay pigeon shooting, horse riding and much much more.
For dinner, head over to their Michelin Starred State Dining room where executive chef Richard Picard-Edwards is turning heads with his fabulous high end fare – dinner is also available to non-residents from Sunday to Friday – Saturday being for residents only.
All in all, from the moment you arrive Ballyfin is exactly what it should be – absolutely superb.
