Close to Heuston Station in Dublin’s very trendy Stoneybatter, you’ll find the superb traditional Irish pub Nancy Hands Bar & Restaurant, a must visit for both tourists and locals alike. Steeped in tradition and dripping with atmosphere, from its 150 year old walls and antique furnishings to its legendary trad music sessions held in the downstairs bar on Friday and Saturday nights. The name is a nod to Nancy, Ireland’s first female pub owner, who used to serve pints through a small hatch during Sunday’s ‘holy hours’, (back in the day when it was forbidden to serve alcohol between 2-4 pm) earning her the nickname Hands.

When it comes to food here, their superb traditional Irish fare is made from locally sourced ingredients and prepared with care. Starters & Small plates include the likes of salt & pepper calamari; halloumi fries with sweet chilli mayo; and Nancy’s chilli nachos made with Robinson’s Irish beef and served with aged cheddar, pickled red onion, pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream. Chicken wings are there too, along with their chowder and soup of the day.

They also do great sambos fit for the trencherman, like their ‘Chicken Stuffer’, ham & cheese toastie, or a Reuben on Bretzel sourdough with pastrami, mustard, sauerkraut and Dublin Cheddar.

Moving on to the mains, their Beef & Guinness Stew is always a hit, slow-cooked and served with horseradish crème fraiche and mash, as is their Fish & Chips of beer-battered North Atlantic cod with twice-cooked frites. There’s Bangers & Mash, Buffalo Chicken Burgers, plus their McGloughlin’s Irish beef Smash Burger, not to mention a tasty Chicken Caesar Salad with panko-crumbed chuck schnitzel. There’s veggie options as well like homemade falafel salad and a vegetarian lasagne. Fancy a beefier version of that lasagne? No problem.
