Reviews on the Road - North by Northwest
Wednesday 27 August 2025
Though families all over the country are grappling with schoolbooks and uniforms right now, there’s still time for one last-hurrah weekend getaway before the school bell rings. It’s also the perfect time to start planning an Indian summer trip for September or October, with more availability in hotels, several food festivals happening, and not as many people on the roads.
This week I’ll be taking you on a road trip west of the Shannon, moving up to the hills of Donegal and back down through Cavan. Kicking off in Carrick-on-Shannon, which is very popular for boating weekends, there’s the Landmark Hotel with its casual, aptly named Boardwalk being a handy spot that offers lunch (12pm-4pm) – soups, salads, sambos, burgers, lasagne et al (€7.50-€19.95) – and a wider evening menu as well (€7.50-€37.95).
