Ever charming, ever suave, ever in command, successful hoteliers in general are a breed unto themselves. And then there are the five-star hoteliers, who seem even more charming, more polished and more suave — their skills sharpened by meeting and greeting the crème de la crème of the corporate, political, sport and showbiz worlds, not to mention the just filthy rich. All these people have to be handled with kid gloves, their sometimes whimsical demands catered to as well as the multifarious, sometimes ridiculous, riders that can apply to their stay.
Back in the 1960s, Arthur Hailey wrote Hotel, a bestselling novel, which became a film and later a TV series in the 1980s starring James Brolin. It was a huge success, the audience mesmerised by the dramatic behind-the-scenes lives of the staff, and the drama and demands out front of their famous guests. Nothing much has changed, and maybe it’s time for a re-boot!
With only a dozen or so five-star hotels in Dublin (and around 40 in the country), Ireland’s five-star community is a little bit like an exclusive club. They all know one another, they all chit-chat about what’s going on and what the opposition is up to, and watch one another like hawks.
