We’re right smack into comfort-food season with hearty dishes making their way back into rotation, whether it’s spag bol or lasagna, Irish stew, shepherd’s pie, chicken curry, or boeuf bourguignon (if we want to make a beef stew sound posh). Whatever your fancy, coming home to these deep aromas from the kitchen isn’t something you get at other times of the year, so breathe them in and savour the moment.

On top of that, winter epitomises the big Sunday roast lunch. I’m often looking at pictures of exuberant families and friends at long tables, wining and dining, which made me question, do people in Ireland still sit around the mammy’s table each week for the Sunday roast? I’m really not sure. I know we don’t in our house, nor in any of my friends’ houses either.
