Long before the word gastropub was coined by The Eagle in Clerkenwell in London back in 1991, Ashton’s on Dublin’s Clonskeagh Road had a reputation for food that was ‘a cut above’ for the average Irish pub.

Established way back in 1874 by Thomas Ashton, it’s had many owners and manifestations down the years, but it’s always been a popular spot for drinks, lunch meet-ups, rugby matches and the like. It helped, I guess, that it’s in an affluent area with a catchment covering from Donnybrook to Dartry, Ranelagh to Rathgar, not to mention Milltown – which also boasts the poshest golf club in the land.
