Description

Kilkenny is a fantastic city, in which I’ve spent quite a bit of time tracing my own family roots. Scenic and stylish, there’s plenty to see and do in the city of cats from historical sites to shopping to the plethora of great restaurants and bars.

Another addition to the fab Kyoto family, the Kilkenny branch of the much loved Asian Street Food restaurant regularly has delighted diners coming back for more.

Kick things off with some Gyoza – deep fried Japanese dumplings – or maybe some prawn tempura or duck spring rolls. Squid or chicken can be had deep fried and tossed with chili, garlic and spiced salt. There’s plenty on offer for veggies too with most of these dishes being available sans meat. And, if tofu is more your thing, they have a deep fried option served with a tempura sauce.

If freshly prepared sushi is to your liking, you’re going to be happy here, with a great selection of sushi and sashimi to choose from, whether you like it Nigiri, Norimaki or Hosomaki.

For the mains, they have a great selection of ‘Wok Stars’ ranging from roast Yakatori duck on a bed of stir fried veg; to Beef Yaki Nikku wok-fried with onions, courgette, carrot, green beans and a Japanese BBQ sauce; to General Tso’s ‘uniquely flavoured’ dish with a sweet slightly spicy sauce and your choice of meats.

There’s some great curries available also with the ubiquitous Thai Green curry proving as popular as ever; a spicy Rendang number with ginger, lemongrass, onion, garlic, lime leaf and coconut milk; or, if you really want something hot, try their Firecracker curry with its homemade fiery sweet hot sauce. The noodle dishes are great at Kyoto as well with offerings such as a Miso ramen bowl of noodle soup with bean sprout, spring onion and seaweed; their ‘JFC’, which is Japanese fried chicken on a bed of fried noodles with teriyaki sauce. Personally, I love their Singapore rice noodle with the thick strands being cooked with egg, onion, pepper, carrot, beansprouts and a delightfully tangy Singapore sauce.

They do great Donburi too (Japanese rice bowls) from haddock tempura; to crispy-fried chicken tatsutaage; to Cha Han. All Donburi dishes come with a bowl of miso soup.

If you haven’t visited one of Kyoto’s sister properties in Waterford and Clonmel, be sure to take note. But, whichever branch of this stellar street food outlet you find yourself at, you’re sure to be impressed.
