Description

Having previously operated Luna Italian restaurant in Dromahair, Co. Leitrim, and other award-winning kitchens over the past 20 years, business partners Joe Grogan and Grainne Sheridan decided to set themselves a new challenge, transforming an old bar on O’Connell Street, Sligo, into the contemporary Walker 1781 Bar & Restaurant.

Situated right in the heart of Sligo Town, they certainly knew they were on to a good location, but there was a lot of work to be done on the premises which had gone through a number of reincarnations over the past two centuries or so. Digging in, the culinary duo did a fantastic job with the décor creating a warm welcoming ambience that’s perfect at any time of day.

With a dedication to providing fresh quality ingredients, Walker 1781 serves up a fab array of premium pub food with a contemporary twist. Open from 10am Monday to Saturday, and from 3pm Sundays, the seafood here is top notch, with locally caught fare being cooked to perfection in dishes like spicy tiger prawns with chorizo; Lisadell mussels in a white wine sauce; or maybe some seafood linguini. And, don’t worry, the good old traditional fish and chips is in the mix, and is right up there with the best I’ve had.

Carnivores won’t be left out in the cold either, with a wonderful succulent selection of viands to start your mouth watering. Think duck leg confit, Irish sirloin steak and, at the top of the pile, there’s Grainne’s slow cooked Irish beef, served with roasted root veg, mash, beef jus and parsnip crisp, which has become a favourite with regular diners.

Besides coming by land or by sea, they also have some great food coming by way of their pizza oven, which is busy turning out classic pies like pepperoni, Margherita or Hawaiian (gluten free available) as well as some more modern creations like a Guinness and Lee sausage pizza with spinach, mozzarella, Parmesan and roast garlic. Mamma mia!

Veggies and vegans are well looked after too with lots of tempting selections to choose from, such as focaccia crostini, goat’s cheese risotto cake or vegetable tagliatelle to name but a few possibilities.

They also do a fantastic range of cocktails, from Rusty Nails to Old Boulevardiers, developed by their talented bar manager Declan McElroy.

So, stop into Walker 1781 for a drink, grab some lunch, and then go explore the town and its beautiful surrounds, and when dinner time comes, you might find yourself longing for more…
