Description

Newgrange is probably one of the busiest tourist stops in Ireland being a must see for most tourists as well as a popular excursion for Irish families and schools. Being over 5,000 years old, it pre-dates Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. It is probably best known for its self-illuminating passage, which visitors have been marveling at for many years; an effect that is caused by the angle of the sun during the Winter Solstice for a few days in late December.

The Bru na Boinne Visitors Centre at Newgrange, which is open all year round, is now home to the delightful Newgrange Café and Tearooms which provide a whole host of tasty treats and savoury selections to its patrons throughout the day. The interior of the café is bright, airy and also quite spacious with room for a hundred or so people to be seated.

When I was there, the array of delicious looking cakes and sweet treats on display at the counter was simply mouth watering. They had all kinds of meringue and fruit based desserts that just looked perfect, as well as lots of devilishly tempting chocolate cakes and brownies that were calling out to be devoured.

Far from being all about sweets and treats, the Newgrange Café and Tearooms offers its customers a great selection of savoury delights with simple or gourmet sandwiches like a carved honey ham on wholegrain with beef tomato and mixed leaves or smoked salmon with mayo topped with red onion and iceberg lettuce leaves. There was also a great variety of quiches and pies. Himself elected for a slice of the Guinness Pie almost immediately, whilst I went for a very tasty vegetarian quiche to accompany my mocha venti.

What really struck me about my visit to the Newgrange Café & Tearoom was the high quality of food and presentation. It’s easy for visitor centres etc to fall into the trap of having terribly basic food and drink facilities because it isn’t their main focus. Newgrange however, have done everything right and the Newgrange Café & Tearoom is of a far higher standard than many of the restaurants I have visited around the country.

There’s no grange like Newgrange.
