About The Restaurant

Mervyn Stewart’s famous Guinea Pig Restaurant in Dalkey, Co.Dublin, is one of the longest standing restaurants in Ireland. The restaurant first opened way back in 1957 when it was a haunt of movie stars filming in Ardmore Studios including John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. It was taken over by the Stewart family in 1978 and running ever since. The fact of the matter is that you don’t get to be one of the longest standing restaurants anywhere unless you have been providing the best of food and the best of service over the years to your customers. Dalkey itself is an upmarket medieval town on the south coast of Dublin where many of the rich and famous of Irish society including rock stars, racing drivers, actors and writers, have their homes. The Guinea Pig itself is very much at the heart of Dalkey life. Located in a pretty house in the centre of the town very close to the DART station, so a perfect way to get there, you can’t miss its exterior because as it is always bedecked with wonderful colourful hanging baskets and window boxes. Seafood and fish are at the heart of the Guinea Pig repertoire, which has had the rich and famous passing through Mervyn Stewart’s door for years, including local residents Bono, Enya, Maeve Binchy, as well as Liam Neeson, Sir Cliff Richard, Meryl Streep and many more. Beautiful lobsters are landed at the nearby Coliemore Harbour and you can have them cooked as you wish – with garlic or lemon butter, or Thermidor with cheese, brandy, mustard – yum. As for the Dublin Bay prawns cooked in Provencal sauce they are sublime. But you don’t have to be just a fishophile to enjoy the Guinea Pig because the best of viands, and game in season, are on offer too. They do a delicious roast half Pekin duck boned, honey roasted, sliced and srved with an apricot liqueur sauce as well as a roast rack of Wicklow lamb with rosemary. They also have On our last visit friend Rena and I had baked Dalkey crab au gratin with a rich cream and cheese topping, and succulent Clew Bay scallops in lemon butter – absolutely divine. I followed up with the king of fish, a generous tranch of turbot, which was baked, topped with black pepper and served on a julienne of leek and carrot. Rena had a cracking sole on the bone, simply grilled to retain that necessary little bite, anointed with butter, and “who could ask for anything more”, as the old song says. There is a luscious display of desserts, liqueur icecreams and sorbets, and excellent cheeses. The wine list has something for every pocket. You could have a decent Chablis at €36 or Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos at €98. House wines are €21.95 or a large glass is €7.95. This is an intelligent wine list. Guinea Pig – The Fish Restaurant – 40 paces from the DART Station in the town of Dalkey where the stars come out at night. Starters €12.50 - €20. ALC Mains €23.50 - €42. Lobster €45/€61. TDH €44.50.
