About The Hotel

Horse and Jockey is the rather unusual name of a village and prominent crossroads, close to Thurles, on the old main road from Dublin to Cork. Only recently bypassed, it was always a focal point for us on the journey south. My better half was in the theatrical business and one year he was directing the Panto at Cork Opera House so we had to get up at the crack of dawn on St. Stephen’s Day and drive like the clappers to be in Cork by noon. I still remember the cold frosty morning and saying ….we are more than half way…we are at Horse and Jockey.

Now the landmark Horse and Jockey has its own stylish hotel, which has 65 rooms, situated in the country’s heart of hurling. The GAA was founded in Thurles in 1884 and lovers of Irish sport have flocked here ever since. If you are one of such fans be sure to drop into the Lar na Pairce visitor centre, dedicated to GAA, whilst you are staying at the Horse and Jockey.

Your eyes will rest easily on the contemporary façade and interior décor of the hotel.
If relaxation is on the cards then this is the place for you. Take a dip in the 21metre pool while the nippers splash to their heart’s content in the children’s paddling pool. Sauna, steam room and gym are also on site and there is a Spa encompassing 7 treatment rooms where you can indulge in facials, massages and wraps.

The hotel’s proximity to towns and cities in the midlands and south make it an ideal place to stay for business or leisure and it has paid special attention to upgrading its conference facilities which can cater to groups as small as six to groups or large as 190 in it’s purpose build auditorium.

Rooms are sophisicated, decorated in vibrant colours and furnished with wood. Executive and Junior Suites will warm your cockles with their gas fires. All rooms including Deluxe and Standard have Plasma TVs, air con, work desks and safes.
There is an excellent restaurant called Silks and the food is really good. There is also the Enclosure Bar which does casual food all day, and a Café Bar for coffee, speciality teas, and freshly baked pastries.

Interesting spots to visit nearby include the Rock of Cashel, Brian Boru Heritage centre, Cashel Folk Village and Cahir and Birr Castles. The hotel provides a good base from which to attend the horse races and golf is available locally.

Give it a lash!
