Twenty years ago if you said you were going to a Spa people would have thought you weren’t well but, oh boy, once we copped on to the joys of Spas did we ever take to them like ducks to the proverbial waters. Spas are for you, for me – not just a Leisure Centre where you are “working” watching the kids splash around, or a Health Farm where you go and pay for the joy of starving. Finally there is a place where we can go, be pampered, forget all our worries, have delicious healthy food and just crash out and rejuvenate.

Coolbawn Quay is a unique private village nestling on the shores of Lough Derg, complete with magnificent marina. Understated and elegant, accommodation is in a series of snug village rooms, larger lakeshore suites, or in luxury cottages with French doors to a private decking area. I watched a legendary movie star being interviewed on T.V. and he was asked what was the secret of his long marriage - “separate bathrooms”, he replied. At Coolbawn Quay they obviously realise this so, their luxurious cottages have a choice of 2, 3 or 4 bathrooms. Here you will receive full hotel style service and, indeed, you may also dine in your cottage. Alternatively, cottages can also be taken on a self-catering basis.

The Aqua Spa Suite comprises a counter-current pool, sauna and steam room, as well as a relaxation room overlooking the lake. There are all sorts of body wrap treatments, Algimud Body Masks, Deep Sea Black Mud envelopment and facials using the holistic Dr. Hauschka and Rene Guinot products. I had the Algae Seaweed Body wrap which was fabulous leaving my skin exfoliated and feeling like silk. Facials for men are superb too, designed to rejuvenate tired skin.

Owners Jay and Kevin Brophy are also in to food, they once owned a top Dublin restaurant, so you are going to enjoy the very best of delicious fare, using fresh local and organic produce, beautifully prepared by their Chef and served in a the candlelit diningroom. Oh there is a bar too, where you can also imbibe and/or have lunch. Coolbawn is on my agenda for regular de-stress visits.

Get the girls together, you deserve it, or take Himself – maybe he deserves it too – it’s the sort of Lough Derg you can both really enjoy!
