About The Hotel
My first introduction to the Cahernane House Hotel was over twenty years ago when my better half and I went there for a weekend. At that stage some German people owned it . I particularly remember our lovely room to the back of the house with ivy-clad walls, overlooking beautiful countryside and lawns. We decided to go for a stroll around the grounds but discovered that there was a pet fox in a wire compound and apparently he was on a diet of live rabbit, which ended our stroll rather rapidly! Since that time of course things have changed in a big way. It is now a spankingly beautiful Country House Hotel stunningly located and I have always had a great affection for it.The former home of the Earls of Pembroke this gorgeous old historic house is at the end of the long tree-lined drive sheltered away from the world yet close to everything, just like being on ones own private estate. The Earls of Pembroke came to Ireland in 1656. One brother was given the great Muckross Estate and the other the smaller property of Currens and Cahernane, and they maintained these magnificent Estates for five generations. In 1877 the original house was considered outmoded, torn down and replaced with the beautiful house which stands today. It is now a spankingly beautiful Country House Hotel stunningly located and I have always had a great affection for it
Located on the Kenmare road just 1.5 kms from Killarney town centre, Cahernane House has undergone a magnificent but sympathetic refurbishment providing now the ultimate in luxury, including suites and junior suites, and superb modern rooms in a new section. Do note the beautiful latticed staircase and scrumptious drawing room, they are really beautiful. Food is excellent too in their Herbert Room Restaurant. We had delicious pan-fried medallions of veal with a wild mushroom and garlic mustard cream on our visit followed by scrumptious pear and almond tart. The wine list is extensive and they also do excellent casual food in the Cellar Bar – delicious seafood chowder, white crabmeat salad and also a lovely Country House Salad of mixed leaves, smoked bacon, poached egg, and asparagus Being run now by the Browne family, Cahernane House Hotel has the benefit of personal and dedicated attention to make your visit the best. It is a lovely romantic spot, they are charming hosts, and there is just something about Cahernane that draws you back.
The Earls of Pembroke sure knew how to pick a location!
