About The Hotel
“I watched the Tall Ships sail gracefully by from here – it was absolute heavenly", I said to friend Miranda. We were sipping champagne on the terrace of Zak’s Restaurant at the Athenaeum, a chic new boutique hotel on ten acres, with views down over the river Suir and marina at Waterford Harbour. The best of modern classical taste and design has gone into the Athenaeum – not a frill in sight - just clean lines and stunning colours. From the Grand Piano in the elegant anti-room to the beautiful side chairs in the hall, the Athenaeum is different. Cardinal purple carpets lead down to the bedrooms, which are understated and elegant, but with funky chairs, flat screen television, modem connections, fridge, and anything else today’s discerning traveller might want.Stan Power and his wife Mailo own the Athenaeum and they cannot do enough for you. Stan is so cool, professional and helpful, I would imagine if he had been captaining the Titanic it would have made it to New York. Mailo is an Interior Decorator and is responsible for the slick beautiful cool décor with its clean architectural lines and modern classical atmosphere, which has been wowing the who’s who of Irish society, who have been beating a path to their door.
Zak’s Restaurant, which is one of the most attractive dining rooms in the country, runs across the back of the hotel. Long and conservatory style, with those great views, you won’t however be too distracted from what is on your plate, which is just delicious and also very well priced. Do have dinner and think Tartare of diced salmon, onion, capers and chives, wrapped in a saffron cream and salmon pearls, or lightly sautéed foie gras on brioche served with duck liver pate with caramelised apple chutney followed, maybe, by the pinkest rack of lamb with aubergine Provencal or Dover Sole. You can look forward to a lovely breakfast too – try their muesli complete with cardamom seeds – they could sell that by the stone weight and make a fortune.
This lovely boutique Hotel on the banks of the River Suir is a real find.
