About The Hotel
Claremorris in Co. Mayo is an ideal place to base oneself for touring the Western and North Western Counties of Ireland because it sits fairly and squarely as a pivotal point in what one might describe as South East Mayo between Galway and Sligo, with Roscommon and Leitrim at its back – it is just a great spot for working out from.
But of course you need to have somewhere good to stay and eat, and to return to after your day’s outings – and there is a helluva lot to see and enjoy. This is where I come in for I discovered that The McWilliam Park Hotel is truly a Great Place to Stay & Eat. Not only is there a helluva lot to see when it comes to touring the magnificent West but the team at the McWilliam Park organise events and happenings for leisure breaks from Painting breaks to Cookery demos with Celebrity Chefs, and of course there are lots of country music and dancing events.
The McWilliam Park is a contemporary 4 Star Hotel with lots of heart and also a vibrant part of the local community. It offers all modern comforts with lovely comfortable spacious bedrooms with all mod cons including WIFI – which I find invaluable when I am travellling the country – plus DVD player and Flat Screen TV – they are a haven to which you can retire and rest. They also have a cracking Leisure Centre with an 18 metre swimming pool which 1.2 metres in depth but also features a children’s area. I have a friend, a Travel Writer, who only likes to stay in hotels with pools and she loves the fact that McWP also have a water fountain, a jacuzzi, a steam room and a sauna – oh yes and a fully equipped Gymnasium. On top of that they have the Chique Skin Care & Beauty Studio so you can emerge a new you.
My better half always heads for the bar where he loves to get talking to people wherever we go! At the McWP that is of course Kavanagh’s which along with doing a really good pint has an excellent bar food menu where you can have a light snack or something really substantial. Light snacks include a traditional Club Sandwich, toasted or plain with salad and fries, or a s chilled shrimp and avocado open sandwich on brown bread. They also do an excellent seafood chowder or that old favourite deep fried Brie served with Cumberland sauce. If you want something more substantial they do a fine 10 oz sirloin steak with garlic butter or pepper sauce or a steak sandwich baguette with grilled pieces of sirloin, saute onions and mushrooms. They also do Chunky Fish & Chips with salad and tartare sauce or deep fried prawns in filo pastry. And the prices are very good.
In their main J.G’s restaurant they have a wide range of well priced serious food. Starters include a galette of goat’s cheese with Balsamic roast tomato; a Pastrami style roulade of smoked salmon, pickled red onion, cucumber and mint, as well as crispy duck spring rolls, absolutely yummy with a timbale of Basmati rice and a plum and hoi sin sauce – always love that. They also do delicious pan fried crab claws cooked in garlic and parsley butter gratinated in a herb crust. The old stalwart fantail of Gallia melon is given a really humourous and modern twist by serving it with a Pina Colada sorbet, Parma Ham, citrus fruit and mixed berry coulis.
The mains offers a really wide selection including steaks, honey roast half duckling, rack of lamb, loin of veal, guinea fowl, and a great selection of fish including turbot, John Dory, Atlantic salmon and of course vegetarian dishes. They also do an innovative children’s menu which the kids will really like – Jackie Chan’s Stir Fry – Woody Wood Pecker’s Bangers and Mash and so on – and it is good wholesome food. They have thought this out well.
All in all, the McWilliam Park is a Great Place to Stay & Eat. Head West!
