About The Hotel

My father was a scratch golfer but it didn’t ever end there – there was always the 19th hole. He disappeared early on a Saturday morning and didn’t arrive home until the late hours which I suppose back in those days left a very long empty day for my mother. She took a great fancy to going on bus tours and the one that stuck most memorably in my mind was to Drogheda, where we visited St Peter’s Church which had on display the skull of Saint Oliver Plunkett. I suppose when you are about 10 years old – it is going to stick in your memory.

Drogheda is one of Ireland’s oldest and most historical towns. It is only 28 miles from Dublin and very handy from both Dublin and Belfast. It is a fantastically interesting area and so many people want to visit the site of the Battle of the Boyne, Newgrange, Slane Castle, all the very interesting spots.

Drogheda has been buzzing in recent years which brings me to the addition of the fantastic new hip hotel – the d hotel – located on the waterfront area overlooking the famous Boyne river. As in many of our cities, the waterfront areas are now the fashionable rejuvenated areas and the d’s new bar and restaurant on the ground floor has a cosmopolitan creative urban feel. Part of the Monogram Hotel Group which also owns the g hotel in Galway, the d adds a new dimension to sophisticated sleek accommodation not just in Drogheda but in the north east and County Louth area.

Bedrooms are just so cool. They offer different levels and price ranges from rooms with superior river views, to rooms with balconies or penthouse suites. All have the de rigueur accoutrements of sleek hotels of today such as plasma screen TV – mini bar- 24 hour in room dining facility – in room safes – Broadband internet access and so on. But to get away from the serious stuff, you will really enjoy the d bar followed by dinner in the contemporary restaurant, which opens onto the riverside terraces. They are serious about their food at the d. The food is eclectic modern european and we had luscious roasted crab claws with coriander and chilli butter and aioli as well as a lovely goats cheese and red pepper tart with rocket and toasted pine nuts. To follow I had delicious pan fried fillet of seabass with pepper, onion, tomato and white bean stew with basil oil whilst my better half had a whacking great 12 oz Louth sirloin steak with hand cut chips, onion rings and peppercorn sauce.

After succulent fresh Drogheda strawberries and bottle of champagne, we looked out at the sun going down over the Boyne river and thought, this is what life is all about.

Rock on….
