About The Restaurant

One of my best friends lives in Blackwater, Co.Wexford. She and her husband lived in Munich for many years and frequently drove down to Italy. They both like their food, and are knowledgeable about same, so when they said to me “there is a very nice Italian Restaurant in nearby Enniscorthy” I knew it was worth investigating. Paolo Fresilli is in fact running his own mini Roman Empire in the Sunny South East and the denizens of same love what he is doing. Paolo is in fact President of the Italian Chef’s Federation in Ireland and an outstanding emissary for the promotion of authentic Italian food. There is a lovely cosy atmospheric feel to the restaurant with lots of vintage pictures of Italian movies stars including Anita Ekberg and a movie poster of her famous film La Dolce Vita which started out originally being called Via Veneto. Starters include include Insalata Caprese which is a salad of Mozzarella Cheese, Tomatoes and Basil – the National colours of Italy which is very nice when good produce is used. Gamberetti in Guazzetto are King Prawns cooked in olive oil with freshly chopped chillies and garlic, tossed with white wine. I always like a good Antipasto which they do well with Parma Ham, Milano salami, Napoli salami and my favourite Bologna Mortadella. My better half likes Carpaccio di Manzo which is beef carpaccio with extra virgin olive oil, Parmesan shavings, salt and pepper, and lemon vinaigrette. Pastas, of course, are just scrumptious. You can do it Italian style and have pasta as your starter or as a main course or side order. They do a great dish of Pasta alla “Norma” – a dish named after Bellini’s Opera of the same name. This is pasta dressed with a sauce made from onions, tomatoes, aubergine, ricotta cheese and basil – delicious. Rigatoni comes with onions, pancetta tesa and tomato, whilst linguine is cooked with mixed seafood and tomato sauce. Tonnarelli “Via Veneto” is long square egg pasta cooked with red onions, prawns and speck. They also have a great range of pizzas – really nice – from a simple Margherita to Diavola with pepperoni which is spicy. Steaks cooked in the Italian style are absolutely scrumptious. Whopping 14oz entrecote can be had grilled and sliced served in a bed of rocket, cherry tomatoes, with Parmesan shavings and Modena Balsamic vinegar, or just grilled and served with fried onions. A 10 oz fillet steak is served in a fine pepper sauce. Saltimbocca alla Romana “Jump in Your Mouth” is a classic dish of veal escalope folded in Parma ham with sage and a white wine sauce – a super dish. Specialities of the House include Filetto Medici which is a 10 oz prime cut fillet cooked with green pepper and fresh sage in a fine Gorgonzola sauce – I love that. All of the food is lavish and delicious and the House Specials come with Italian style roast potatoes with Rosemary. You can then indulge in Amaretto Cake, Tartuffo Nero, Tiramisu, Cassat Sicilliana…..lots more and of course don’t forget to have the old Sambuca to finish off. It certainly is La Dolce Vita at Paolo Fresilli’s “Via Veneto”.
