About The Restaurant

“Funny thing," I said to my son, Ian, in Toscana Italian restaurant and pizzeria. "I remember sitting in exactly this spot on an equally wild, wet, windy night many years ago when the car ferry to Holyhead was cancelled due to bad weather". It was then a restaurant called Hatters and we were the only two who had ventured out that night in a howling gale. My better half had known the waitresses ex-lover and so we got the whole sorry tale for the night, ending up with her sitting down and laying into our vino.” It must be eight or nine years ago since I wrote that paragraph as part of my review of the then new Toscana. All this time on, Toscana has just got better and better, and both my sons are now grown up and still one of their favourite places is Toscana.

Toscana is located in the fine three-story house on the Dun Laoghaire seafront, close to Teddys ice cream shop; the best table is, of course, in the bay window. Downstairs there is a little bar area with tables and the main restaurant is upstairs in a lovely bright atmospheric room. The menu was and is similar to many other Italian restaurants, but the standard of food and preparation is really good. They now also have their own Organic Home Grown Menu derived from vegetables which they bring each day from their own organic garden in Blessington, Co.Wicklow.

All the old favourites are still there - Minestrone Soup, Insalata Caprese, Suppl, as well as Gamberi Italiani - Tiger Prawns wrapped in filo pastry, deep-fried, and served with a mild chili sauce. They serve fresh Irish smoked salmon simply with red onions, capers, and toasted bread whilst Calamari Fritti is fresh pan-fried calamari with garlic butter, lemon juice, chives and white wine. Meatballs are made to a Tuscan recipe and topped with a mild chili sauce. One of my favourites is the Antipasto all’Italiano, a selection of Parma ham, salami, Mortadella, Provolone cheese, stuffed green olives, sundried tomato, red pepper, artichoke and smoked salmon served with delicious homemade bread. Suffice to say there is a choice of some fifteen pastas from Linguine con I Gamberetti I Pollo – Prawns and chicken in white wine, cream, cherry tomatoes and Italian seasoning – to Penne Marinara – penne pasta with fresh calamari, shrimp, tuna and mussels, cooked in a garlic, white wine and creamed tomato sauce.

There are a dozen pizzas from the folded Calzone type with ham, mushrooms, onions, Mozzarella, and oregano, to Frutti di Mare – topped with tuna, mussels, shrimps, anchovies, garlic, Mozzarella and oregano. Main courses include salmon, oven baked whole seabass, five varieties of chicken dishes, chargrilled steaks, rack of lamb, and two veal dishes. Salad specials include their own vegetables served perhaps with freshly cooked prawns, chicken or cheese. They now have an Organic Burger menu using Irish organic beef or lamb and they also have A La Carte specials, which might be Agnella alla Perugina – slow roasted shank of lamb or maybe pasta with salmon and asparagus. Desserts might be traditional Tiramisu or Profiteroles or maybe rich Chocolate Fudge Cake – and of course Gelati – ice cream. Lots of well priced wines, so Bon Appetito.
