About The Restaurant
Quite the perfect place for breakfast, a lovely lunch, afternoon tea, or indeed all day food is the Green Barn Café Bistro at the Green Barn Lifestyle Store and Garden Centre – indeed the whole package makes a great day out.
The Café Bistro is in a lovely building which always reminds somehow or other of the R.D.S. at Simmonscourt with its equestrian style weathervane and perfectly maintained pretty grounds where you can also sit outside, weather permitting, and have a bite to eat. It is set in its own private grounds so there is no problem with parking and there is oodles of space for kids to run around and look at the pet hens and ducks.
Owned and run by the Browne family, it is very ably managed by the efficient and affable Tadgh Foley who looks after all of the diners and their particular requirements with speed and charm. The decor is rustic and pretty in the Cath Kidson style with floral oil cloths, funky lights, wooden flooring, and lots of fresh flowers and pretty hens and quirky bits on the tables.
Lots of local produce is used on the menu and some of the dishes can be had as either starters or mains. They always have an excellent seafood chowder as well as a fresh homemade soup of the day served with excellent brown bread. Starters include Caprese salad which is slices of Buffalo Mozzarella, tomato, and fresh basil leaves, all drizzled with olive oil. Chicken liver pate is served with toasted brioche and plum sauce whilst they also do a classic shrimp cocktail with Marie Rose sauce in a smart cocktail glass. East Cork fish cakes with lemon, garlic, aioli and rocket – this is a real favourite of Brendan’s as is their Shepherd Pie. Ardsallagh Goats cheese salad with rocket, pine nuts, baby beetroot and a honey vinaigrette is delicious and you can have this as a starter or main, the same with the fish cakes, and a smoked salmon salad with baby new potato salad, rocket, lemon, capers, red onion and horseradish mayo.
There is a roast of the day every day – great roast beef, turkey and ham, pork, bacon or lamb and lots of people come for this every day. They also do an 8 oz homemade gourmet burger with onion rings, chunky chips and Green Barn tomato relish, and a steak sandwich on ciabatta bread with caramelized onion and chunky chips. Beer Batterd Fish ‘n Chips comes with mushy peas, chunky chips and Tartare sauce whilst Chef Richard’s Greenbarn seafood pie is served with a tossed salad. Thai Green Chicken curry is there with aromatic rice as is poached salmon is with a Moroccan style spiced fruity cous-cous, baby new potatoes, rocket and Harissa mayo. Oh, yes and they do lovely pasta with chorizo, roasted peppers, tomato, garlic and basil freshly picked from their own herb garden which you can see as you dine in the restaurant.
Leave room for puds as they always have delicious pear and almond tart, chocolate gateaux and more.
Sunday lunches are legendary – all sorts of lovely roasts – perfect for a relaxing Sunday before or after your browse in the shop or garden centre.
They also have a large private function room overlooking the gardens so perfect for all your family occasions.
