About The Restaurant
During the Celtic Tiger years we became a Dine Out Nation, which is something our continental cousins have enjoyed for decades, and there is nothing wrong with that but to be a Dine Out Nation we need good places, doing well produced food at good prices. This is an area that has been catered for very well by Padraic Frawley with his trio of Restaurants, two in Limerick, Aubars and the Cornstore, and the Cornstore in Cork.Aubars is a bar, bistro and nightclub right in the heart of the City of Limerick which has been operating highly successfully for over a decade. It is open seven days a week from 8.30 a.m. starting with breakfast menu, and serving food and beverages to denizens of the city at decent prices in their general bar area and bistro. It morphs in the evening to a very popular bar and restaurant doing great cocktails. This place is a hub of activity and fun. The street is pedestrianised so perfect for sipping a beverage or three continental style in the outside heated and canopied enclosed area.
The menu changes frequently but also retains some of their stalwart popular dishes. Light Bites can be had as just that, or used as starters, if you, like me, enjoy your food! These include peppered calamari served with a spicy Creole dip, and Dublin Bay Prawns served with Marie Rose sauce on really good homemade granary bread served with mixed leaves. Thai chicken skewers come with a peanut sauce, whilst the very popular chicken Caesar salad is there with all the bits, warm chicken, baby gem leaves, warm organic bacon lardons, herb croutons and shaved Parmesan. There is always a good wholesome soup of the day with granary bread and they also do a very nice chunky seafood chowder.
Mains include their very popular homemade bacon and cheese burger served with their relish and proper chips. Pan fried salmon is with creamy mash, or roast chicken breast is with yummy colcannon, roast root vegetables and a red wine jus, whilst their fish pie is also excellent topped with comforting creamy mash. Other popular dishes include Bangers ‘n Mash, Gourmet Steak sandwich, Club Sandwich and Lamb Pittas. The do very nice pastas dishes, tagliatelle is served Carbonara style, linguine is with Tiger prawns, chilli, garlic and coriander, whilst fusilli is with black olives, roast red peppers, basil pesto and shaved Parmesan. They also do a jolly good value 2 course menu, with a wide selection of dishes, plus tea or coffee at €14.95
Desserts include sticky toffee pud with vanilla icecream, warm raspberry and frangipane tartlet, as well as Eton Mess. I love their flourless chocolate cake…..and himself likes the warm apple crumble with fresh cream – perfect for the Mummy’s boys!
Enjoyable eclectic food in a buzzy atmosphere.
