About The Restaurant
One of the great romantic stories of the 19th Century was that of Elizabeth Empress of Austria, better known as Sissi, the Princess Diana of her day. Three movies were made of her life story starring Romy Schneider. I must have seen them 50 times when I was a teenager. Like Diana, Sissi was a troubled body who travelled all the time and was a frequent visitor to Ireland for the Hunting, and great House Parties of the time. No doubt she would have felt very much at home on The Mount Falcon Estate, itself resulting from another true love story.
In 1872 Ultred Knox commissioned architect James Franklin Fuller, who also designed the Guinness family homes of Ashford Castle and Farmleigh, as well as Kylemore Abbey, to construct a palatial home for his beautiful bride Miss Nina Knox-Gore of Belleek Manor. And so was born the stunning Mount Falcon 2,200 acre Estate on the west bank of the River Moy.
In more recent years it became a Country House open to visitors including Vivien Leigh and Peter Sellers. In 2002 the estate was bought by the current owners who hail from the area and have with great love and attention to detail restored Mount Falcon to its former glory.
The Mount Falcon Estate re-opened in 2006 and now comprises the most magnificent 4 Star Country House Hotel, Fisheries, and a small number of luxury self catering suites located in lakeside, woodland and courtyard settings, around the 100 acre Estate. It is an ideal destination for golfers to enjoy the numerous nearby Golf Courses and there is unprecedented access to the most prolific salmon river in Ireland, the River Moy. Mount Falcon has already attracted Tiger Woods, Mark O Meara and Nick Faldo as guests.
Bedrooms are stunning. Suites and de-luxe rooms are on the top floor of the original house with all the old features intact, high ceilings, original marble fireplaces, cornices, and a bell to summons the servants. Superior rooms too are glorious with superking beds, custom designed free standing furniture. There is a fabulous 17 metre swimming pool, steam room, treatment rooms and so on, everything to enable you relax and enjoy.
Before dinner we ensconced ourselves in the Boathole Bar. The food is fabulous as is the really cool Kitchen Restaurant transformed from the original kitchen and pantry. French Chef Phillippe Farineau - cooks Irish food with a French heart, lobster, veal, salmon - and if you don't enjoy his food there is something wrong with you. We had delicious Seared Clew Bay Scallops with celeriac and Black Truffle puree, celeriac chips, and Black Truffle Cappuccino followed by Mayo Rack of Lamb with Black Eye Beans Cassoulet, Dauphinois Potato, Mint Crumbled and Goat Cheese Jus. Phillippe is wonderful with chocolate; he even does Sunday Lunch with a Chocolate Buffet; so look out too for the Petit Four Trolley.
Mount Falcon is pretty irresistible.
