About The Hotel

Fancy waking up in a four-poster bed in a splendid Georgian house, on 6 acres of rambling woods and rolling lawns, in the magnificent wilderness of Connemara? If so, Henry and Elaine Reid’s 4 Star Ross Lake House Hotel is for you. Ross Lake House was formerly part of the Killaguile estate built by James Edward Jackson, land agent for Lord Iveagh at Ashford Castle, but renamed as a Country House Hotel because of its proximity to Ross Lake and the fishing waters of Lough Corrib. With 13 spacious guestrooms and suites, all beautifully and individually designed to reflect the charm and graciousness of the house, yet provide the modern facilities we all expect nowadays, you will be very comfortable. There are lovely classic rooms oozing with country house charm, fabulous superior rooms with period furniture and luxurious fabrics, and then, stunning suites with their own sitting area. As pretty Oughterard is only 22 km from Galway City, it is ideal for visiting the vibrancy that is Galway, but choosing to leave it when you wish. There are Golf Courses all round – Oughterard, Barna, Galway Bay and Ballyconneely Links Course so if he wants to swing a club you can take off to the Antique shops. You are also ideally poised at Ross Lake for doing the rugged wilder aspects of the Connemara of “The Quiet Man”. There is a cosy library bar to snuggle into and an elegant drawingroom with blazing fires to retire to after dinner and make new friends over a nightcap of the liquid variety. The dining room is gracious and the Chef concentrates on the finest fresh produce from the Connemara hills, rivers, lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. We had a superb dinner of Galway crab and a warm goat’s cheese salad with pesto dressing, followed by soup course of Aran seafood chowder, and then roast rack of Connemara lamb with a rosemary jus and wild salmon with a white wine sauce. We rounded off the meal with scrumptious pear and almond tart with a crème Anglaise and Irish Farmhouse cheese, all washed down with a Moreau-Fontaine Chateauneuf du Pape 2001 from a fine wine list. Henry and Elaine are charming and helpful hosts and, believe me, you will really enjoy a spell at their lovely Ross Lake House Hotel.
