‘Nobody’s going back into town any more,” said Marc Bereen, as I asked whether he was following the trend of restaurateurs/chefs moving to the suburbs. We were in his new 26-seater eponymous Orwell Road restaurant, a chic little spot with a glorious art nouveau-style shopfront, near the village end.

Rathgar has always been rather posh and, many years ago, was the subject of a hilarious song, made famous by Ireland’s original panto king, Jimmy O’Dea. Following a memory-refresh on YouTube, Thank Heavens We Are Living in Rathgar didn’t seem all that out of date to me! However, Rathgar — apart from a couple of places — is something of a dining desert; it’s a gap the Bereen brothers are more than happy to fill.
